Drinking Water Compliance NZ

As accredited Drinking Water Assessors (DWAs) we worked through the compliance requirements of many water suppliers of all sizes.

Compliance with the Drinking Water Standards New Zealand (DWSNZ)

As a registered drinking water supplier you are required by law to ensure the water you supply meets the minimum standards set out in the Drinking-water Standards for New Zealand (DWSNZ).

The DWSNZ are the place where you’ll find all of the compliance information you will need to assess whether the water you’re supplying is acceptable.

The DWSNZ specify compliance criteria for a range of contaminant groups of importance including: bacteria (e.g. E.coli), protozoa (Giardia), cyanotoxins (blue-green algae), chemicals both introduced and naturally occurring, and radioactive materials of public health significance.

As accredited Drinking Water Assessors (DWAs) we worked through the compliance requirements of many water suppliers of all sizes. It is a fact that the compliance regime can be quite daunting for those unaccustomed to working with the DWSNZ, and provides a real challenge for many of those purporting to understand them! A number of different parameters need to be considered including:

  • the concentration of a determinand in a sample must not exceed the MAV (Maximum Acceptable Value) for that determinand;
  • samples need to be collected within a specific period of time, need to be collected using standardized techniques, need to be tested in accredited laboratories and so on;
  • operational limits need to be adhered to and records showing this kept;
  • a record of meeting your compliance requirements for at least the previous 12 months is required;
  • remedial actions need to be carried out when required and records of these kept

If you would like to learn more about how we can help you manage and meet your compliance requirements, then you can either contact us at johnd@ehconsulting.co.nz or use the simple request form (Click here) We can also provide advice and oversee improvements to your existing compliance management if wanted!

In the meantime the DWSNZ are reasonably easy to get hold of, particularly if you have access to the Ministry of Health’s website:http://www.moh.govt.nz/moh.nsf/pagesmh/8534 where they can be downloaded for free.
